Ethernet Address Resolution Protocol: Or Converting Network Protocol Addresses to 48.bit Ethernet Address for Transmission on Ethernet Hardware

چکیده

The implementation of protocol P on a sending host S decides, through protocol P’s routing mechanism, that it wants to transmit to a target host T located some place on a connected piece of 10Mbit Ethernet cable. To actually transmit the Ethernet packet a 48.bit Ethernet address must be generated. The addresses of hosts within protocol P are not always compatible with the corresponding Ethernet address (being different lengths or values). Presented here is a protocol that allows dynamic distribution of the information needed to build tables to translate an address A in protocol P’s address space into a 48.bit Ethernet address. Generalizations have been made which allow the protocol to be used for non-10Mbit Ethernet hardware. Some packet radio networks are examples of such hardware. -------------------------------------------------------------------The protocol proposed here is the result of a great deal of discussion with several other people, most notably J. Noel Chiappa, Yogen Dalal, and James E. Kulp, and helpful comments from David Moon. [The purpose of this RFC is to present a method of Converting Protocol Addresses (e.g., IP addresses) to Local Network Addresses (e.g., Ethernet addresses). This is a issue of general concern in the ARPA Internet community at this time. The method proposed here is presented for your consideration and comment. This is not the specification of a Internet Standard.]

A More Fault Tolerant Approach to Address Resolution for a Multi-lan System of Ethernets Status of This Memo

Executing a protocol P, a sending host S decides, through P’s routing mechanism, that it wants to transmit to a target host T located somewhere on a connected piece of 10Mbit Ethernet cable which conforms to IEEE 802.3. To actually transmit the Ethernet packet, a 48 bit Ethernet/hardware address must be generated. The addresses assigned to hosts within protocol P are not always compatible with ...

Two Methods for Active Detection and Prevention of Sophisticated ARP-Poisoning Man-in-the-Middle Attacks on Switched Ethernet LANs

This paper describes two novel methods for active detection and prevention of ARP-poisoning-based Man-inthe-Middle (MitM) attacks on switched Ethernet LANs. As a stateless and inherently insecure protocol, ARP has been used as a relatively simple means to launch Denial-of-Service (DoS) and MitM attacks on local networks and multiple solutions have been proposed to detect and prevent these types...

A secure address resolution protocol

We propose an architecture for securely resolving IP addresses into hardware addresses over an Ethernet. The proposed architecture consists of a secure server connected to the Ethernet and two protocols: an invite-accept protocol and a request-reply protocol. Each computer connected to the Ethernet can use the invite-accept protocol to periodically record its IP address and its hardware address...

Implementation and performance study of a hardware-VIA-based network adapter on Gigabit Ethernet

This paper presents the implementation and performance of a hardware-VIA-based network adapter on Gigabit Ethernet. VIA is a user-level communication interface for high performance PC clustering. The network adapter is a 64-bit/66MHz PCI plug-in card containing an FPGA for the VIA Protocol Engine and a Gigabit Ethernet chip to construct a high performance system area network. The network adapte...

sMAT – A Simplified MAC Address Translation Scheme

In Ethernet-based access networks, network security plays a more significant role than in ATM-based access environments. We assume that in the foreseeable future Internet access can be established without using the conventional Point-to-Point protocol. Various scenarios already envisage straightforward delivery of selected IP services over Ethernet, e.g., forwarding of multicast services in Eth...
